As we approach the end of summer, now is a great time to start thinking about restoring the body and mind. Here are five steps to create a healthier body and mind.

Oh, summer how we love you!  

While enjoying the holidays, the warmer weather, and catching up with friends, for most of us, summer also means we eat and drink more than we know we ought to and we sleep a whole lot less too. Now it's time to think about how we can get back in control of our minds and bodies as well as our finances.  

1. Drink More Water

While we are sleeping our bodies has been fasting, which means when we wake our bodies need to be replenished with liquid. One of the best ways is to drink a warm cup of water with fresh lemon juice which will wake the body gently. Be sure to always drink room-temperature water; when water is too cold, our blood vessels shrink and hydration is hindered.  

Many people like to drink coffee in the morning, which is fine, however, see that you drink water afterwards so your body doesn´t become dehydrated.  

Try to drink two litres of water every day. Purchase a non-corrosive metal water bottle which you can refill throughout the day. 

2. Prioritise Sleep

Sleep is essential for our health. Getting a good night´s sleep increases our metabolism, allows our bodies to heal, skin cells to replenish, and our minds to process the events of the day. 

Studies have shown that seven to eight hours of sleep each night is the optimal amount. While, of course, everyone´s body clock is different, a good guide for sleeping is 22:00 – 06:00. Whatever hours you decide, make sure you prioritise time for quality sleep. 

3. Get Moving

The fact is our bodies were made to move, and lack of physical activity can have negative effects on our bodies. While you should aim to have regular exercise routine such as going to the gym, strength training or yoga, you can introduce your body to moving by simply walking instead of taking the bus. For example, while commuting to work, get off a few stops before your usual stop and walk for 20-30 minutes.  

While at the office, use a standing desk instead of sitting down the entire day. Take a walk during your lunch break will do wonders for you physically and mentally allowing you to stretch your legs, clear your mind and enjoy some fresh air. 

4. Meditate

There are many scientifically proven benefits to meditation. It doesn´t need to be advanced or formal practice. In fact, one of the best things about meditation is you can do it whenever and wherever you want, be it in the office, on the bus, or at home.  

Start and end your day with 5 or 10 minutes of meditation. Additionally, taking a brief pause throughout the day to centre yourself – for example, by simply concentrating on your breath - will help you let go of any stresses, be it work or financial concerns, and regain control of your thoughts and sharpen your focus.

5. Start the Day Right

The best way to start the day is with a nutritional breakfast. Try a delicious green smoothie, a protein-packed porridge, or cold pressed juice.  

Maybe you´re not a morning person and never find the time to have breakfast at home – that´s fine. When you wake, replenish your body with a glass of water and pick-up a smoothie or one of the many readymade breakfast bowls available at coffee chains and convenience stores on the way to work and eat when you´re at the office.
